Observation

Theyrejected his gospel, but it was the pleasure of God to reveal it to obscure andmore humble people. The reason given, the only satisfactory reason is that itseemed so good in the sight of God. (AB).

Theinvitation is to take His “yoke” upon yourself. His Yoke is His teachings.Would you allow His teachings to guide your life like the yoke on an ox whenplowing?

Day 4

Observation

Jesus visited not only the great and wealthy cities, but the poor, obscure villages; and there he preached, there he healed. The souls of the meanest in the world are as precious to Christ, and should be so to us, as the souls of those who make the greatest figure. Christ is the Lord of the harvest. Let us pray that many may be raised up and sent forth, who will labour in bringing souls to Christ. It is a sign that God is about to bestow some special mercy upon a people when he stirs them up to pray for it. Commissions given to labourers in answer to prayer are most likely to be successful (MH).

Observation

Beingin the corn-fields, the disciples began to pluck the ears of corn: the law ofGod allowed it, Deut 23:25. This was slender provision for Christ andhis disciples; but they were content with it. The Pharisees did not quarrelwith them for taking another man's corn, but for doing it on the Sabbath day. Christcame to free his followers, not only from the corruptions of the Pharisees, butfrom their unscriptural rules, and justified what they did. (MH)

Observation

It was not usual to take a piece of rough woolen cloth, which had never been prepared, to join to an old garment, for it would not join well with the soft, old garment, but would tear it further, and the rent would be made worse. Nor would men put new wine into old leathern bottles, which were going to decay, and would be liable to burst from the fermenting of the wine; but putting the new wine into strong, new, skin bottles, both would be preserved. (MH)

Jesus is all about making things new. Too often we tried to put our new belief in Christ onto our old beliefs. This only causes a break-down of our faith.

Observation

Some time after his call, Matthew sought to bring his old associates to hear Christ. He knew by experience what the grace of Christ could do, and would not despair concerning them. Those who are effectually brought to Christ cannot but desire that others also may be brought to him. Those who suppose their souls to be without disease will not welcome the spiritual Physician. This was the case with the Pharisees; they despised Christ because they thought themselves whole; but the poor publicans and sinners felt that they wanted instruction and amendment. (MH)

Joh 6:61-64  Awarethat his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he wasbefore! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. Thewords I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe."

The human nature ofChrist had not before been in heaven, but being God and man, that wondrous 

Person was truly said to have come down from heaven. The Messiah's kingdom wasnot of this 

world; and they were to understand by faith, what he had said of aspiritual living upon him, and his 

fulness. As without the soul of man theflesh is of no value, so without the quickening Spirit of God 

all forms ofreligion are dead and worthless. He who made this provision for our souls,alone can 

teach us these things, and draw us unto Christ, that we may live byfaith in him. Let us apply to 

Christ, thankful that it is declared that everyone who is willing to come unto him shall be made

Joh 6:43-51  "Stopgrumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent medraws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It iswritten in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who hasheard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No onehas seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen theFather. Verytruly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am thebread of life. Yourancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But hereis the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am theliving bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

No man can come to me - This was spoken by Jesus to reprove theircomplaints - “Murmur not among yourselves.” They objected to his doctrine, orcomplained against it, because he claimed to be greater than Moses, and becausethey supposed him to be a mere man, and that what he said was impossible. Jesusdoes not deny that these things appeared difficult, and hence he said that ifany man believed, it was proof that God had inclined him. It was not to beexpected that of themselves they would embrace the doctrine. If any manbelieved, it would be because he had been influenced by God.

Draw him - This word is used here,evidently, to denote such an influence from God as to secure the result, or asto incline the mind to believe; yet the manner in which this is done is notdetermined by the use of the word. It is used in the New Testament six times.Once it is applied to a compulsory drawing of Paul and Silas to themarket-place, Act_16:19. Twice it isused to denote the drawing of a net, Joh_21:6,Joh_21:11. Once to the drawing of asword Joh_18:10; and once in a sensesimilar to its use here Joh_12:32; “AndI, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” What is its meaninghere must be determined by the facts about the sinner’s conversion (AB)
